The Cromer Law Group PLLC: Sexual abuse is a very sensitive area of the law, especially when minor children are involved. These cases can include sexual abuse by a clergy member, school teacher or school staff member, a coach, or even a family member. Sexual abuse also can involve elder victims abused by nursing home staff members. Many women fill compelled to “put-up” with the cat-calls or the highly improper sexist remarks. Contact one of our “Detroit Aggressive” lawyers for a free consultation today. Know your rights!

The growing and well publicized issue in this area of the law is church sex abuse cases. These cases can unfortunately cause life changing psychological and emotional damage to the victim of a sexual assault. Sexual abuse can have a variety of effects on a child, ranging from dramatic behavioral changes at home; to poor performance in school.

Once retained to represent the victim, we typically advise that the abused victim interview with an experienced psychologist. The evaluation performed by a trained expert in the area of sexual abuse, helps our lawyers better determine not only all the underlying facts of the case, but gives us a better idea as to what the potential damages may be.

In addition to the actual abuse, other potential defendants can include the church, school, day-care facility, hospital, nursing homes, or business entity where the sexual assault occurred (e.g., insufficient background checks or hiring practices).

According to the federal government statistics, victims of sexual abuse are three (3) times more likely to suffer from depression, four (4) times more likely to contemplate suicide, thirteen (13) more times likely to abuse alcohol and twenty-six (26) times more likely to abuse drugs. Furthermore, fifteen (15%) percent of sex abuse victims are under the age of twelve (12); forty-four (44%) percent of victims are under the age of eighteen (18) and ninety-three (93%) percent of children sexually abused — know their attacker.
